Relationships Start Early

Dr. Virginia M. Shiller, Assistant Professor at Yale University, reports in The Attachment Bond: Affectional Ties Across the Lifespan, how you feel about your child and how you respond to your child when h/she

approaches you will affect their self-confidence, problem solving ability, independence, language, and their ability to form strong social relationships.

Dr. Shiller's work is featured today in a New York Times article, "Why a Baby's Relationship with a Parent Matters" (click on title for the article). The good news is that if our early experiences of attachment were not good enough, or what we needed at the time, our experience is not beyond repair. Schema Therapists can help individuals fill in the gaps and affect how early experiences of attachment are remembered and ultimately influence current emotions, perception and behavior.
