Falling in Love

"Falling in Love with the Wrong Person." It is not surprising that Alain de Botton's article (click here to be taken to the article) is one of the most read articles of 2016.

Mr. de Botton'ssuggestion of learning "...to accommodate ourselves to wrongness, striving always to adopt a more forgiving, humorous and kindly perspective on its multiple examples in ourselves and in our partners" is the core of my work with both individuals and couples. With one caveat, rather than simply adopting an attitude of pessimism it is more helpful to assume a posture of curiosity about ourselves and the other, and do not be satisfied with what immediately comes to mind. It is the "familiar" assumption that needs to be challenged, which is a helpful posture in deciding whether one remains in the relationship or leaves it behind.
